Upcoming Comics: July 31st, 2013

Grant Morrison’s Batman epic comes to an end, we get a few pricey annuals, another installment in a really entertaining video game tie-in, and more from Trinity War. Also, Batman #21 gets reprinted as the first of the Zero Year Director’s Cut which features Capullo’s original pencils and the full script by Scott Snyder for $6 bucks.

Here are the review comics coming out this week, July 17th, graded on a scale of my own anticipation.

Anticipation Level:   TAKE MY MONEY

It’s the ending of Grant Morrison’s Batman epic and he said in an interview with Newsarama, “I think people will hate it, because it’s super bleak. It kind of –to a certain extent it destroys the the concept of Batman.” I fully expect this to be the comic that everyone will be talking about this week.

TrinityPandora2

TRINITY OF SIN: PANDORA #2

Written by RAY FAWKES
Art by DANIEL SAMPERE and VICENTE CIFUENTES
Cover by RYAN SOOK
1:25 B&W Variant cover by RYAN SOOK
On sale JULY 17 • 32 pg, FC, $2.99 US • RATED T

Anticipation Level:   Ambivalent

Trinity War has been alright so far, but there hasn’t been anything all that shocking since chapter one and I don’t expect to find any major revelations in a tie-in issue, but hopefully I’m wrong. Hopefully Pandora #2 offers up some answers and maybe even pushes the plot forward a little more. I would be great to see the Secret Society make another play because right now they’ve just been sitting back while the heroes struggle to figure out what’s going on.

BatmanAnnual2

BATMAN ANNUAL #2

Written by MARGUERITE BENNETT
Art by WES CRAIG
Cover by JOCK
On sale JULY 31 • 48 pg, FC, $4.99 US • RATED T

Anticipation Level:   Interested

Like James Tynion before her, Bennett is a former student of Scott Snyder who has been given the extraordinary opportunity to break into comics with a Batman story. However, I’m not quite sure how exactly this story will factor into the greater Zero Year arc (if at all) so I’m really curious to see what this story holds. Preview images show a Bruce who is already Batman plus an imprisoned Mad Hatter, Clayface, and Riddler! Snyder’s only plotting the story, Capullo isn’t illustrating it, and it apparently takes place post-Zero Year. I’m very interested to see what this book holds.

DETECTIVE_ANNUAL_2

DETECTIVE COMICS ANNUAL #2

Written by JOHN LAYMAN
Art by SCOT EATON and JAIME MENDOZA
Cover by ANDY CLARKE
On sale JULY 31 • 48 pg, FC, $4.99 US • RATED T

Anticipation Level:   Interested

I really dug the first part of the Wrath storyline that kicked off July and the annual promises to expand on the anti-Batman’s tale as well as deliver a possible shape-shifter storyline.

Injustice7

INJUSTICE: GODS AMONG US #7

Written by TOM TAYLOR
Art by JHEREMY RAAPACK, MIKE S. MILLER and KEVIN MAGUIRE
Cover by MICO SUAYAN
On sale JULY 31 • 40 pg, FC, $3.99 US • RATED T • DIGITAL FIRST

Anticipation Level:   Interested

Keep ’em coming! This is a fun comic that really enhances the story of the video game and now the plot is definitely creeping into territory that the video game totally glossed over: the beginning of Superman’s reign and Batman’s resistance movement.
