It’s the final week of Villains month and it’s filled with monsters. This week we’ll be following the activities of Bane, Man-Bat, and Killer Croc as well as the Secret Society themselves but if you’d rather skip out on all of this Arkham War/Forever Evil build-up there’s always Injustice: Gods Among Us!
Here are the review comics coming out this week, September 25th, graded on a scale of my own anticipation.

The armies of Apokolips tried to invade Earth and failed as Superman made the ultimate decision to never hold back again. The crowds cheered as the Man of Steel slaughtered every last alien invader, but the Batman and his band of rebels can see that this is the start of something truly terrible for Earth. Darkseid’s invasion was only the battle, but the real war is about to begin. It is a war that will pit Batman against Superman and while we know how it ends from having played the video game, we haven’t seen the confrontations that started it all and for that reason I am very interested in seeing what happens next.
JUSTICE LEAGUE #23.4: SECRET SOCIETY
Written by GEOFF JOHNS and STERLING GATES
Art by MANUEL GARCIA and ROB HUNTER
3-D motion cover by MIKEL JANIN
On sale SEPTEMBER 25 • 32 pg, FC, $3.99 US • RATED T
Anticipation Level: TAKE MY MONEY
This is one of the Villains Month books that I’m most curious about. We know the least about the Secret Society and they’re the ones responsible for all this Villains Month business in the first place. I expect answers from this comic.
BATMAN #23.4: BANE
Written by PETER J. TOMASI
Art by GRAHAM NOLAN
3-D motion cover by GUILLEM MARCH
On sale SEPTEMBER 25 • 32 pg, FC, $3.99 US • RATED T
Anticipation Level: TAKE MY MONEY
The architect behind the upcoming Arkham War event has written a story about Bane’s assault on Gotham. I imagine this will be pretty satisfying for readers of Talon, who have been waiting for Bane’s invasion to happen for months and it’ll be pretty great for the average Bane fan too since it’s being drawn by the original co-creator of the character. Look for this to be an important prologue to Arkham War.
BATMAN AND ROBIN #23.4: KILLER CROC
Written by TIM SEELEY
Art by FRANCIS PORTELA
3-D motion cover by PATRICK GLEASON and MICK GRAY
On sale SEPTEMBER 25 • 32 pg, FC, $3.99 US • RATED T
Anticipation Level: Interested
From what I heard, the creators of Batwoman were very upset that they were not given the chance to write Killer Croc’s Villains Month issue so I’m curious to see what direction Tim Seeley (Hack/Slash) takes the character. Will we get a New 52 origin story or will we see how Killer Croc survives in the Forever Evil world leading in to Arkham War?
DETECTIVE COMICS #23.4: MAN-BAT
Written by FRANK TIERI
Art by SCOT EATON and JAIME MENDOZA
3-D motion cover by JASON FABOK
On sale SEPTEMBER 25 • 32 pg, FC, $3.99 US • RATED T
Anticipation Level: Interested
I’m very suprrised that Detective Comics writer John Layman did a Clayface Villains Month issue rather than the Man-Bat story what with Man-Bat being such a big part of the current run. However, Frank Tieri did a good job with last week’s Penguin one-shot so I’m optimistic about this. Obviously, doing an origin story would be a waste of time since that’s been covered in so much detail in Detective Comics both in the #700 issue (#19 by New 52 numbering) and the recent backup tales so I expect to see some Arkham War developments from this installment.
Graphic Novel Watch!
Justice League, Vol. 3: Throne of Atlantis, Shazam! Volume 1 (which isn’t really Batman-related, but I just suggest you all pick it up), and Legends of the Dark Knight: Jim Aparo, Vol. 2 are all released in hardcover this Wednesday.
