It seems that we could have seen ex-professional wrestler Dave Bautista in The Suicide Squad, but instead he got a tempting offer to work with Zack Snyder.

In a new feature in Entertainment Weekly about Zack Snyder’s Army of the Dead Bautista shared why he wanted to star in the film,  but it came at a price.

“I said I wasn’t interested,” Bautista shared. “I had this chip on my shoulder and was looking for juicy [dramatic roles]. Then I read the script and it was a lot deeper and had more layers than I thought. And also, to be quite frank, I wanted to work with Zack.” He went on to share that he passed on a role in The Suicide Squad to take this opportunity despite it meaning he would not work with his friend, James Gunn.

Bautista was one of the staunchest supporters of Gunn when he was fired by Disney, and threatened to leave Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 over the decision. So it’s not difficult to imagine that was not an easy decision for the actor to pass working with his friend.

As fans, it leaves you to wonder who he may have played. The easy call is Peacemaker which ended up going to John Cena. But, of course, there is always a chance that Gunn could have thrown all of us a curveball and he could have played Polka-Dot Man.

Army of the Dead doesn’t currently have a release date outside of “2021,” while The Suicide Squad is due to hit theaters and HBO Max on Aug. 6, 2021.
